Have you ever seen Jimmy Fallon's late-night "thank-you card" bit? To the tune of gentle piano melodies, Jimmy scribbles out note after note as his "thank-you cards" which inevitably end with a goofy punch line. Today's blog post feels a little like that (minus the punch lines)...in a good way! January is National Mentoring Month, and I can't think of a better way to start out the new year than acknowledging the aspects of our community that allow BBBS of Delaware County to be a mentoring resource. One of my personal resolutions for 2018 is to be more intentional about expressing gratitude. In my personal life, I have found that taking time to count my blessings and thank the helpers, encouragers, and of course, mentors in my life has impacted me as much as it has impacted them. The awe of acknowledging the good in life-- especially the good only made possible by others-- is a powerful force.

I consistently see that force when I walk through the doors of our office downtown. 119 E. Charles St. is a hub of connection. Here, staffers collaborate with one another (and often with other nonprofits) to do difficult & awesome work, and sometimes Bigs and Littles drop by to connect with BBBS staff face to face. Regardless of what connection is being made, whether a meeting, interview, or simply a check-in chat, the amazing individuals working in the office are continually saying "thank-you." Our mission is not one that can be accomplished without gratefulness. And of course, this little office is continually dependent upon the time of volunteers, donations from the generous, and always, always: the presence of Littles. These parts of the community may not directly mentor all of us here at BBBS, but they certainly contribute to our capability to provide mentorship resources to children in need. They inspire us, motivate us, and set an example for how our improvements should look. And after all, isn't that what the best mentors do?

We'll be celebrating National Mentor Month on our Facebook page all month. To thank our volunteers and in celebration of National Thank Your Mentor Month, Starbucks is offering "Big Appreciation Days." On January 5, 12, 19, & 26, our current Bigs can receive a free tall beverage when they present their Big Brothers Big Sisters ID cards. Pretty sweet.
