Our Impact
According to a nationwide impact study conducted by
Public/Private Ventures, a national respected research organization, the Big
Brothers Big Sisters model of one-to-one mentoring was shown to have a direct, significant
and measurable impact on the lives of children. According to the research these findings are a powerful force in influencing children's behaviors because of the Big Brothers Big Sisters signature approach to mentoring.
The research found that the program offers a positive, broad-based program, "that focuses less on specific problems after they occur, and more on meeting youths' most basic developmental needs.
When Little Brothers and Little Sisters feel good about themselves, they positively impact their friends and families, their schools and their communities. And as this important study has shown, these young people believe in themselves because a Big Brother or Big Sister believed in them".
Compared to their peers, Little Brothers and Little Sisters who met consistently with their Big Brothers and Big Sisters were:
- more confident
- less likely to begin using illegal drugs and alcohol
- less likely to skip class
- more confident in their schoolwork performance and did better in school
- less likely to hit someone
- getting along better with peers and families
